Overview:
Do your clients experience Fatigue, brain fog, sensitivity to strong odors and perfumes? Do they feel negative effects of even small amounts of caffeine or alcohol, or are they sensitive to even low doses of medications? Do they have difficulty losing weight? These could all represent issues related to toxic burden and less than optimal detoxification.
Let’s face it – we live in a toxic world! Lancet Neurology reports a doubling of neurotoxic chemicals in the last 7 years! The CDC reports that over 40,000 chemicals are currently used in commerce in the US and an estimated 1,000 or more are made each year. What’s more, they admit that complete toxicological screening data is available for only a fraction of these chemicals!
This course will dive deep into toxicity sources and assaults and cover detoxification, which is the metabolic process of clearing toxins from the body or neutralizing or transforming them, and then excreting them from the body. Detoxification takes place through the process of biotransformation, where a substance is changed from one chemical to another in the body, and then excreted. This process helps to protect us from many chronic diseases. To be sure, this is not a process that can be underestimated, and oftentimes needs more support!
When oxidation is high, the body’s toxic burden increases. We’ll learn that a person’s toxic burden is not just about exposure to, but how well an individual’s detoxification system works. Those who have trouble detoxifying are characterized as poor metabolizers and often present with adverse effects due to the buildup of free radicals contributing to inflammation and chronic disease. The degree to how well someone can detoxify is linked to genetic differences called genetic polymorphisms.
We’ll explore assessment methodology to help us better determine a patient’s toxic burden and detoxification status. This includes the usefulness of symptom questionnaires, and lab assessment, both through general blood laboratory testing (looked at through a different lens) and specialized Functional Medicine testing.
We’ll provide step-by-step exploration into the complex physiology of all aspects of biotransformation, and of course, explore in detail the vital balance of optimal nutrition that is required for the process to work most efficiently. Evidence-based therapeutic intervention will be addressed thoroughly with regards to detoxification regimens including diet, supplementation, and lifestyle, as well as mind-body therapies.
Objectives:
Upon completing this module, participants will be able to:
- Explain the biotransformation process differentiating each of the 3 phases and the biomarkers that assess same
- Discuss the sources and factors that represent detox burden and that contribute to successful biotransformation including the role of genomic SNPs
- Make intervention recommendations that support detoxification to include food, lifestyle, and supplements
